Prognostic significance of serum osteopontin levels in small cell lung cancer

Abstract: Background: Osteopontin (OPN) is closely related to tumor occurrence and metastasis. This study explored the clinical value of serum OPN levels in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients. Methods: The ELISA method was used to determine the OPN level of 96 SCLC patients before and after first-line chemotherapy, and compared with 60 healthy controls. Results: The serum OPN level of SCLC patients before treatment was significantly higher than that of the healthy control (P < 0.001). Serum OPN levels were related t… Show more

“…As many of the above-mentioned parameters become more relevant during the course of chemoradiation, it is plausible that the hypoxic tumor volume significantly correlates with osteopontin levels at baseline but not during treatment. Many of the confounding variables are especially relevant in HNSCC, potentially explaining the discrepancy regarding osteopontin kinetics between HNSCC and other tumor types [54] , [55] . In this respect, previous publications demonstrated incongruent findings about the dynamics of plasma osteopontin levels during the course of treatment [32] , [47] .…”

“…Osteopontin induces furin expression in a CD44 → p38 MAP kinase → NF-κB-dependent manner [ 69 ]. Notably, osteopontin is present in human lung airways [ 70 ], the major target tissue of infection in COVID-19 patients. Osteopontin levels are highly upregulated at sites of inflammation [ 71 , 72 ] and in diabetes [ 73 ].…”

“…More than half of SCLC patients are in the extensive stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis. Despite systematic treatment, the overall 5‐year survival rate for SCLC remains below 15% 3 . Therefore, it is necessary to seek novel biomarkers in order to diagnose and predict the progress of SCLC.…”
