Prognostic Significance of Peripheral T‐Cell Subsets in Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Objectives The role of the immune system in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is controversial. The aim of our study was to analyze full blood counts and distribution of T cell subsets in patients affected by laryngeal squamous cell cancer (LSCC) and their association with clinical variables and survival. Study design Retrospective study. Methods We analyzed the levels of platelets, lymphocytes, and neutrophils, as well as the CD4+, CD8+, and CD3+ T‐cell subpopulations by cytofluorometry in LSCC patients. … Show more

“…Peripheral CD8 + T cells was higher in lung cancer patients compared to the health, while CD3 + and CD4 + T cells, and CD4/CD8 ratio was signi cantly lower [22]. The relationship of lower CD4+/CD8 + ratios and recurrent disease and higher level of CD3+/CD4 + and nodal metastasis was found in laryngeal squamous cell cancer [16].…”

“…The metastasis of lung cancer is related to the increase of circulating tumor cells [14], which can be in uenced by the change of CD3+, CD4 + cells in peripheral blood [15]. A study about laryngeal squamous cell cancer indicates lower CD4+/CD8 + ratios are related to recurrent disease and a higher level of CD3 + and CD4 + is associated with nodal metastasis [16]. The increased risk of lung cancer is associated with low CD4 cell count and low CD4/CD8 ratio [17].…”

“…Similar to other malignancies, neutrophils were found at elevated levels in the peripheral blood of HNSCC patients, and their frequencies were inversely correlated with the frequencies of lymphocytes (89,90). Patients with HPV-associated tumors had significantly lower levels of circulating neutrophils compared to patients with HPV-negative tumors, and the high absolute number of neutrophils correlated with poor prognosis in HPVpositive patients but not HPV-negative patients (91).…”
