Prognostic indicators for toxic mastitis in dairy cows

Abstract: During a three-year study, 54 cows with toxic mastitis were examined and a number of clinical and laboratory measurements were taken. Twenty-five (46.3 per cent) of the cows died, and in comparison with those which survived, they had a significantly higher packed cell volume (PCV) (P < 0.01), longer eyelid skin tent time (P < 0.01) and lower rectal temperature (P < 0.01). In a model designed to predict the probability of survival, these variables correctly predicted survival in 84 per cent of cases and death i… Show more

“…This was consistent with the result of Green et al [4] who found that there was a significant difference between the mean PCV of the cows which survived and those which died. Also, there were significant differences in rectal temperatures, eyelid skin tent time and packed cell volume between the cows which survived and those which died [4]. We found a positive relationship between the severity of systemic disease signs and the percentage of cows with an undesirable outcome (death or culling).…”

“…In light of our results, assessment of the local/systemic hypoperfusion is not of interest in the general population of DCS. This biomarker might be more useful when dealing with cases where hypoperfusion is well documented . The current study design and objectives did not allow us to test this hypothesis.…”

“…Despite the widespread occurrence of toxic mastitis, little quantitative information is available about the clinical and laboratory findings from such cases (Jones and Ward 1989, Katholm and Haubro Andersen 1992, Green and others 1998). This paper reports the results of clinical observations and laboratory analyses of samples obtained from cases of toxic mastitis in cows throughout Northern Ireland.…”
