Prognostic Factors in Follicular Lymphoma

Abstract: Follicular lymphoma (FL) is one of the most common types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, for which many treatment options exist, however, no curative standard therapy has been identified. The outcome is highly variable with a median survival of approximately 10 years. The life expectancy of patients with FL has been extended with the use of rituximab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the CD20 antigen on FL cells, but there remains a group of patients who fail to respond … Show more

“…The present study found no difference in survival between t(14;18)-positive and -negative groups in conjunction with studies of extranodal follicular lymphomas outside the ocular adnexal region (Goodlad et al 2004;Weinberg et al 2009;Relander et al 2010). However, only patients with the t(14;18) had recurrence.…”

“…2 Summerfield et al, 11 studying 46 follicular lymphoma patients under 40 years of age, found that 74% were Ann Arbor stages III and IV. In our series, these stages corresponded to 66% (56 of the 85).…”

“…1,2 It is the commonest form of indolent B-cell lymphoma, and is clinically manifested with multiple relapses and remissions. The median age at diagnosis is about 60 years and there is a slight female predominance.…”

“…It is also likely that specific types of treatment influence or modify the prognostic impact of certain parameters in the microenvironment. 6,11 Another possible explanation for the contradictory results is variation in the immunohistochemical staining and scoring across laboratories. We have previously shown that the reproducibility of scoring immunohistochemical stainings is poor and often inadequate for several frequently reported markers expressed on lymphoma cells in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).…”
