Prognostic factors in Burkitt's lymphoma importance of total tumor burden

Abstract: In 42 patients with African Burkitt's lymphoma, we have studied biochemical and clinical correlations with prognosis. Clinical stage and anti-EA titer were the best predictive factors, but lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and uric acid (UA) concentrations also correlated with stage and prognosis, whereas lactic acid (LA), which was significantly elevated in Stage D, did not significantly correlated with prognosis or with LDH and UA levels. All of these factors with the possible exception of LA reflect the total body… Show more

“…Our findings may provide a molecular basis for altered tumor glycolysis when the Warburg effect and previous links between elevated LDH-A levels and human cancers are taken into consideration (2,58,59). In particular, an elevated LDH level is an independent predictor of poor clinical outcome in Burkitt lymphoma, a disease characterized by activation of the c-myc gene by chromosomal translocations (17,59,60). An elevation of lactate production in a transgenic mouse model that overexpresses c-Myc in the liver further supports the ability of c-Myc to induce the Warburg effect (61).…”

“…Its concentration rises during tumor growth. Serum LDH level has significant correlation with total tumor burden 8 . There is a good relationship between serum LDH level and the course of neoplasia and the degree of dissemination of the neoplastic process.…”

“…22,52 Increased access to more advanced imaging studies (ie, CT or improved ultrasonography), diagnostic laboratory studies (such as lactate dehydrogenase, uric acid, and Epstein-Barr viral load monitoring), and radiology-guided biopsy procedures may improve uptake of pathologically confirmed diagnoses for abdominal lymphomas. 12,53 …”
