Prognostic evaluation of percentage variation of metabolic tumor burden calculated by dual‐phase 18FDG PET‐CT imaging in patients with head and neck cancer

Abstract: Our results did not prove a prognostic interest of percentage variation of metabolic tumor burden in patients with HNSCC but confirmed that RI and MTV are independently correlated with RFS. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 38: E600-E606, 2016.

“…Moreover, recent studies have shown a higher prognostic significance of MTV to predict survival in patients with HNSCC. Our group has also proven in several prospective series that pretreatment MTV was an independent predictive factor for recurrence free survival, unlike SUV MAX and T stage in multivariate analysis …”

“…Thus, with the most heterogeneous tumors, the risk is greater to obtain more than 1 cluster, resulting in a loss of this heterogeneity information by having to adjust manually the VOI . However, 40% of SUV max threshold method has been frequently used in HN cancers series …”

“…MTV was defined as the volume of tumor showing FDG uptake and TLG was defined as the product of MTV by mean SUV. MTV of primary tumor (pMTV) and lymph nodes (nMTV) were generated from voxels above 40% of the SUV max of primary tumor and lymph nodes, respectively . Primary tumor TLG (pTLG) and nodal TLG (nTLG) were automatically calculated after MTV was generated.…”

The total MTV (tMTV) and total TLG (tTLG) were generated from the sum of the primary tumor and nodal volumes.…”
