Prognostic Analysis of Preoperative Inflammatory Biomarkers in Patients With Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the prognostic role of inflammatory biomarkers in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: For this study, we enrolled 151 patients who had undergone surgery for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. We assessed the preoperative neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), mean platelet volume, red cell distribution width, and alkaline phosphatase. The chi-square test, Kaplan-M… Show more

“…Although there are some reports which suggest that PLR might be associated with survival in head and neck cancers [26,27], other studies confirm our finding that it is not a significant factor for OS [28][29][30].…”

“…Moreover, the cut-off values are significantly different. For example, in the aforementioned studies, the authors used the cut-off values of 13.2% [ 24 ] and 15% [ 25 ] for RDW, and 2.32 [ 26 ], 2.2 [ 27 ], 1.81 [ 28 ] and 3.9 [ 29 ] for NLR.…”

“…Our results are in line with data provided by previously reported studies that confirm the adverse prognostic impact of elevated PC in cancer patients. [27][28][29][30][51][52][53][54][55] However, according to other DLBCL studies, thrombocytopenia rather than thrombocytosis is a poor prognostic factor. 20 This could be explained by the different patients' populations and different rates of bone marrow infiltration.…”

“…35,36 In the present study, the elevated AMC represented an independent, powerful predictor of unfavourable outcome that is highly consistent with previously published studies in solid tumors and lymphomas. 10,[37][38][39][40][41][51][52][53][54][55] The exact pathophysiology for the association between high monocyte counts and poor prognosis is not well understood. However, being an important player in immunity, monocytes might play a role in the chronic inflammation which has already been associated with the induction of stomach can-cer and the link with cancer progression has been known for over a century.…”

“…10 Evidence supporting the use of these markers as predictors of clinical outcome in head and neck cancer has been reported, although the cut-off value of these markers has not yet been standardized. The cut-off value of the NLR, PLR, and LMR varied among studies, ranging from 1.99 to 7.0, [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] 106 to 170, 12,14,16,18 and 2.7 to 5.22, 12,14,19,20 respectively. To our knowledge, there is currently no evidence supporting an association between inflammationbased markers and the survival of patients with TBSCC.…”
