Prognostic analysis of postoperative clinically nonmetastatic renal cell carcinoma

Abstract: Objectives:To investigate the survival characteristics of postoperative nonmetastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients, and the predictive value of a prognostic model. Materials and Methods:We retrospectively evaluated data from 1202 postoperative nonmetastatic RCC patients who were treated between 1999 and 2012 at West China Hospital, Sichuan University (Chengdu, China). In addition, we also evaluated data relating to 53 205 cases acquired from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program… Show more

“…RCC is a common urinary tract tumour with high incidence and poor prognosis, and it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, leading to poor treatment effect [ 1 3 ]. At present, RCC is mainly treated by surgery, and metastatic RCC can be supplemented by drug therapy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.…”

“…When RCC is diagnosed, about 30% of RCC patients are already in the advanced stage of the disease; therefore, the risk of postoperative recurrence is high [ 2 ]. Even in patients with local RCC, about one-third of patients after surgery may have cancer metastasis [ 3 ]. Despite advances in treatment, the prognosis of patients with advanced RCC is still not satisfactory.…”

“…[ 39 ] Moreover, the results of this study show that tumor stage and grade could significantly affect the prognosis of ccRCC, which was in line with previous findings. [ 40 ] Tumors with later stages and grades tend to be more aggressive and have higher malignant potential. It has been reported in the literature that right-sided RCC was correlated with better survival than left-sided RCC, [ 41 ] which also supports our data.…”

“…Approximately one third of the patients diagnosed with RCC are found to be in the advanced stage [ 4 ]. In patients who are diagnosed with RCC at an early stage and operated on, the probability of metastasis during follow-up is 30 percent [ 5 ]. In RCC, the clinical parameters of the patient are as important as other parameters such as the stage, grade or histological type in determining the prognosis of the disease.…”
