Prognosis of prostate cancer and bone metastasis pattern of patients: a SEER-based study and a local hospital based study from China

Abstract: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the leading cause of cancer-related death among men worldwide. Knowledge of the prognostic factors of PCa and the bone metastasis pattern of patients would be helpful for patients and doctors. The data of 177,255 patients with prostate cancer diagnosed between 2010 and 2013 with at least five years of follow-up were retrieved from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to determine the predictive value of patients’… Show more

“…Prostate cancer (PCa) is a leading cause of cancer-related death among men, with 174,650 new cases and 31,620 deaths estimated to occur in 2019 in the United States. 1 Metastatic growth in distant organs, especially bone (the most common metastatic site) 2 , 3 is the major cause of the high mortality rate. Although there have several strategies (including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, androgen deprivation therapy, radionuclide, diphosphate, zoledronic acid, et al) recommended for the treatment of PCa bone metastasis, 4 , 5 most of them are palliative, not curative.…”

“…About 10% of patients with PCa have bone metastasis at presentation, with a rate as high as 80% for patients with advanced PCa ( 3 , 4 ), and about 33% of the remaining patients will develop metastases during follow-up ( 5 , 6 ). In addition, patients presenting small numbers of metastases have a better prognosis than those with a widespread disease ( 7 ) and may benefit from salvage targeted therapies in the metastatic setting ( 8 , 12 ).…”

“…This prognostic factor was also found to be relevant by Zhang et al, who included these factors in a predictive scoring system [42]. Sex, primary tumor grading, and age were also found to be relevant risk predictors by other recent cohort studies [43,44].…”
