Profiles of learners based on their cognitive and metacognitive learning strategy use: occurrence and relations with gender, intrinsic motivation, and perceived autonomy support

Abstract: For life-long learning, an effective learning strategy repertoire is particularly important during acquisition of knowledge in lower secondary school—an educational level characterized with transition into more autonomous learning environments with increased complex academic demands. Using latent profile analysis, we explored the occurrence of different secondary school learner profiles depending on their various combinations of cognitive and metacognitive learning strategy use, as well as their differences in… Show more

“…Those more "Pragmatic" students who adapted better to different contexts and educational approaches benefited from the learning path that gave them application mastery and medium-high difficulty level questions. These observations are consistent with research demonstrating how metacognitive preferences affect students' relationships with instruction and learning (Delgado Martínez & Mahecha Fontecha, 2021;Kwarikunda et al, 2022;Valdez, 2022). The application of the four metacognitive profile classifications "Active," "Pragmatic," "Theoretical," and "Reflective" is a relevant contribution to the research because it provides a perspective for analyzing students' responses to different learning paths.…”

“…Physics is a natural science based on experiments (Prabowo & Sucahyo, 2018). Science education has the main goal of forming students who think like scientists, who are independent, and capable of efficient lifelong learning (Kwarikunda et al, 2022).…”
