Profiles of Dialogue for Repairing Faults in Arguments from Expert Opinion

Abstract: Abstract. Using the profiles of dialogue method we identify a species of ad verecundiam fallacy that works by forestalling of questioning in arguments from expert opinion. A profile of dialogue is a graph structure used to model a sequence of speech acts surrounding both the putting forward of an argument and the response to it at the next moves in a dialogue. The method is applied to a case of cross-examining a software engineer in a legal deposition in a case of intellectual property litigation.

“…applied the profiles tool to problematic examples of arguments associated with failures of relevance, especially one where there is an issue of whether an ignoratio elenchi fallacy has been committed. Koszowy and Walton (2017) applied the profile tool to particular examples of arguments from expert opinion associated with the ad verecundiam fallacy, the fallacy of incorrect appeal to authority. Krabbe (2002) applied the profile of dialogue tool to an example of the fallacy of equivocation.…”

“…This paper extends Krabbe's findings by applying an extended version of the profiles tool to a series of realistic examples of the fallacy of amphiboly found in logic textbooks and other sources. The profiles tool has already been applied to some other informal fallacies (Krabbe 1992(Krabbe , 1999(Krabbe , 2002Koszowy and Walton 2017;Walton 2015;, but this is the first time that it has been specifically applied to the fallacy of amphiboly (to the author's knowledge).…”

“…To pursue this goal we focused on the ad verecundiam fallacy by employing the profiles of dialogue method (Krabbe 1999). “…pragmadialektikai megközelítés funkcionális, a vita koreográfiájába illeszkedő szerepet tulajdonít nekik (összehasonlításért lásd: Wagemans 2011, Kutrovátz 2012), retorikai elemzések pedig kiemelik ezek "megfélemlítő" használatát(Goodwin 1998). Ezen álláspontok ötvözését kísérli megKoszowy-Walton (2016) ún. dialógusprofilok mentén történő elemzéssel.…”
