Profile of Serum IL-1β and IL-10 Shortly after Ovariectomy and Estradiol Replacement in Rats

Abstract: Ovariectomy leads to progressive and significant increases in body weight gain and osteoporosis and is related to changes in serum and tissue cytokine profiles, such as observed in other models of overweight. We aimed to evaluate serum interleukin-1beta and interleukin-10 shortly after ovariectomy, before the establishment of overweight in rats. Female Wistar rats were submitted to ovariectomy, ovariectomy and estradiol replacement, or sham operation and compared with intact controls. Rats were killed 3, 6, 9,… Show more

“…In ovariectomized rats, circulating levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β were found to be increased significantly 3941. However, to our knowledge, there have been few reports on changes of cytokines in surgically menopausal women.…”

“…Previous studies demonstrated that OVX rats have an increase in body mass that could be a consequence of a hyperphagic state (32,33), a decrease in energy expenditure (EE) (50), or both. Thus these animals show an increase in adipose tissue (43), fat content in the liver (43,44), heart and skeletal muscle (28), dyslipidemia (28,53), insulin resistance (46,51), and changes in the serum cytokine profile (37), which are characteristics of a metabolic syndrome. These metabolic disturbances that lead to changes in body composition and insulin resistance are also detected in postmenopausal women (29, 31, 59a).…”

“…The lack of ovarian hormones in female adult rats leads to a signifi cant increase in body mass [ 1 , 2 ] , and overweight is rapidly established at the fi rst 2 weeks after ovariectomy, as shown by Percegoni et al [ 3 ] . Hence, ovariectomy in rats is widely used to study the physiological mechanisms that underlie obesity associated with ovarian hormones defi ciency [ 4 ] .…”
