Objective: to develop psychometric assessments of the adapted version of the Competency Evaluation Questionnaire for Brazilian nurses in the hospital context, assessing the reliability of the internal structure of this version.Method: a methodological study was undertaken, in which the sample consisted of 273 nurses from two public hospitals. The scale consists of 27 items, distributed in five competence domains. For the construct validity of the adapted version of the instrument, Cronbach's Alpha was verified, Confirmatory and Exploratory Factor Analysis was applied and Cronbach's Alpha was again calculated for the questionnaire domains, aiming to validate its new structural arrangement.Results: the total Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was 0.923, while the coefficients per domain ranged from 0.397 (Management) to 0.833 (Nursing process. In the factor analysis, a Comparative Fit Index and Tucker-Lewis Index of 0.808 and 0.783 were found, respectively, demonstrating acceptable and near-ideal values. In the exploratory factor analysis, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin index was 0.918 and the result of Bartlett's sphericity test was p<0.00. After developing a new structural arrangement of the scale, the internal consistency of the new domains was confirmed and ranged from 0.732 to 0.845, that is, all indices were consistent. Conclusion:the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Competence Evaluation Questionnaire consisted of 27 items, grouped in the domains they belong to. The criteria of the exploratory factor analysis applied were met, showing an appropriate, valid and reliability instrument. Conclusión: la versión para el portugués brasileño del Cuestionario de Evaluación de Competencias quedó compuesta por 27 ítems agrupados con los dominios al que pertenecen y obedeciendo a los criterios del Análisis Factorial exploratorio realizado, rebelándose como un instrumento adecuado, válido y confiable. Objective:To analyze nurses' competencies with regard to their work in post-operative heart surgery and the strategies implemented to mobilize these competencies. Method: This was an exploratory study with a qualitative approach and a methodological design of collective case study. It was carried out in three post-operative heart surgery units, consisting of 18 nurses. Direct observation and semi-structured interviews were employed to collect data. Data were construed through thematic analysis. Results: nine competencies were found, as follows: theoretical-practical knowledge; high-complexity nursing care; nursing supervision; leadership in nursing; decision making; conflict management; personnel management; material and financial resources management; and on-job continued education. Organizational and individual strategies were employed to develop and improve competencies such as regular offerings of courses and lectures, in addition to the individual pursuit for knowledge and improvement. Conclusion: the study is expected to lead future nurses and training centers to evaluate the need for furthur training required to work in cardiac units, and also the need for implementing programs aimed at developing the competencies of these professionals.

Humanization in the Intensive Care: perception of family and healthcare professionals

Objective: Understanding perceptions of family members and healthcare professionals about humanization at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to direct it to an educational action. Method: Exploratory descriptive and qualitative study conducted in an ICU level 3 of a public hospital in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil, with fourteen subjects, eight family members and six healthcare professionals. Data collection carried out through semi-structured interviews and focus group. Content Analysis was used. Results: Emerged categories were: welcoming; communication; ethical and sensible professionalism; unfavorable aspects; perception on humanization; and religiosity/spirituality. Final considerations: Although the subjects have expressed their perceptions about humanization in different ways, both groups pointed out the same needs and priorities to improve humanization in Intensive Care. From the results, we created a refl ective manual of humanizing assistance practices for professionals, a board to facilitate communication of these professionals with patients and a guideline book for family members. Considerações fi nais: Apesar dos sujeitos expressarem de maneiras distintas suas percepções sobre humanização, os dois grupos comparados elencaram iguais necessidades e prioridades para o aprimoramento da humanização na Terapia Intensiva. A partir dos resultados, criou-se um Manual Refl exivo de práticas assistenciais humanizadoras para os profi ssionais, um tabuleiro para facilitar a comunicação destes profi ssionais com os usuários e um guia de orientações aos familiares.
