TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractSand-control completion performance has been a key point of discussion within our industry for several years. Widely varying values of skin and PI exist and arguments have been made to oppose or support different completion techniques currently available. In many cases, these arguments are made in attempts to promote certain completion techniques when more time should be spent understanding the probable sources of the condition. This paper examines closely (1) how reservoir properties in the near-wellbore region can change significantly over time under production conditions, and (2) how these changes can affect well performance over time. It looks at the significance that reservoir compaction can have when reduction in permeability is accounted for and how detrimental this compaction can be to well productivity.In reservoirs subject to compaction, the behaviors of radial completions are compared to frac-pack completions over the life of the well. The paper demonstrates that although the conductive fracture may not be a dominant factor in well productivity early in the life of the well, it can become very significant in maintaining well productivity and performance later in the life of the well. In effect, these completions can be designed to improve well performance over time, and in many cases can result in decreasing skin factors with time, thus minimizing the decline in productivity.Reservoir modeling was performed that considered nearwellbore compaction and the presence of a high-conductivity fracture; this model agreed well with observations made from several deepwater developments.A detailed case history is also presented wherein sufficient reservoir evaluation was conducted over time to validate the effects of compaction and the long-term performance improvements that can be achieved using frac-pack completions with these reservoir conditions.

AbstractThe Troika Subsea development project has produced the top four hydrocarbon producing wells in the Gulf of Mexico -three wells each delivering greater than 40,000 STBOE/D sustained rate. This paper will give the reader an overview of the completion designs and installations, but equally important, what lessons we learned to apply on our next deepwater high rate producers.The Troika field is located in 2700' of water and was a fast paced development project which was delivered (from discovery to first oil production) in only 39 months -a deepwater industry record! This subsea development consists of five subsea wells clustered around a production manifold and tied-back 14 miles to the host platform. Many well design aspects, various technologies, and timing issues had to converge quickly for the success of this project.Completion practices will be reviewed and resulting productivity performances will be charted. Similarly, it appears that the modeling studies warning of substantial productivity losses due to inadequate fracture conductivity have not been universally convincing.Perhaps many practical frac engineers simply object to the theoretical nature of these arguments, when they quote one of the more influential orators of our time, Shania Twain, 1 stating, "That don't impress me much."Instead, many Petroleum Engineers prefer to see the economic benefit demonstrated in real reservoirs, and seemingly borrow a quotation from the film Jerry Maguire, 2 stating, "Show me the money!"The purpose of this paper is to summarize the results of over 80 field studies where well productivity was improved by increasing the fracture conductivity. The benefit of increased conductivity has been demonstrated in oil, condensate, and gas reservoirs in 50 regions around the globe. This benefit was documented by 250 authors representing over 70 companies. Increased conductivity has been shown to be beneficial in oil wells producing 2 bopd to 25,000 bopd, and in gas wells producing less than 1 MMCFD to over 100 MMCFD. Higher conductivity fractures were proven to improve the cash flow in carbonates and sandstones at depths of 2800 to 20,000 feet, and in low rate coal bed methane wells shallower than 1500 feet.This review of industry experiences in a wide variety of reservoirs is not presented as a substitute for a comprehensive optimization study in a specific location. Instead, the following summary demonstrates that well productivity and profitability can frequently be improved with redesign of hydraulic fractures, despite the failure of many existing production models to predict those benefits.These studies are presented to satisfy the following goals: 1) To verify that the extreme pressure losses observed in the laboratory and predicted by current fluid flow theory are real, i.e., "Proving It". 2) To provide a list of fields, encompassing a wide variety of reservoir types, to assist engineers searching for results from an analogous field. 3) To provide a number of field studies to which production models can be calibrated. 4) To summarize the collective experience of over 250 authors, and incorporate what they have learned into future fracture designs. 5) To demonstrate the relationship between fracture conductivity, well productivity, and cash flow, i.e., "Show me the money!"
