The study examined the information needs of farmers on post-harvest storage of tomato in Jigawa State, Nigeria. A total of one hundred and 120 tomato farmers were interviewed for the purpose of eliciting information through a 4-stage sampling procedure. Majority (75.0%) of the respondents were males (90.0%), married (89.2%), Muslims (95.9%) with Islamic education (50.0%). The respondents’ average (x ): household size is 9 persons, farm size of 1.6ha, monthly income of N30,916.67 and age of 41.6 years. Primary occupation of the majority is farming (96.7%) with mean farming experience of 13 years. Main source of labor is family labor (86.7%). Greater proportions source their funds through personal savings (77.5%). Land ownership is through inheritance (66.7%) and no extension service involvement (97.5%). The most needed information on post-harvest storage is lack of current information, techniques for record keeping and sustainable market (100.0%, x = 3.50), respectively. They were only aware of post-harvest storage like basket cooling (91.7%), sorting and grading (80.8%) and refrigeration storage (59.2%) among others while severe constraints were: lack of capital for post-harvest activities, government policy and infrastructure (99.2%, x = 3.78). The result of the Pearson Correlation showed positive relationship with educational level, household size, average monthly income and farming experience. The research recommended the recruitment of more competent extension officers for more farmers’ contact, structured and focused government policies on tomato post-harvest practices and periodic training of farmers.

The study examined the effect of market access on the adoption of sustainable soil management practices by farmers in the study area. Specifically, the study described the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers; identified the sustainable soil management practices adopted by the farmers; determined factors influencing the choice of sustainable soil management practices used; determined the relationship between market access and the adoption intensity of sustainable soil management practices and identified constraints faced in adopting sustainable soil management practices. Multistage sampling procedure was employed to collect data from one hundred and fifty (150) farmers. Thereafter, data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate probit regression. The findings revealed that the mean age of the respondents was 45 years, with a mean household size of about 6 members. Majority (69.6%) of the respondents had formal education and a mean year of experience of about 18. The study also revealed that all the respondents had access to one form of market or the other for purchase of inputs and sales of their products. In addition, the mean distance covered from farm to home was less than 5 kilometres for most of the respondents while the distance from home to major market and farm to major market was between 5 and 10 kilometres. The most popular sustainable soil management practices adopted by the farmers were the use of chemical fertilizers, crop rotation and intercropping. Furthermore, the multivariate probit regression model showed that age of the respondents, educational level, farm size, household size, farming experience, farm income, awareness of sustainable soil management practices, average distance to the input market, average distance to the output market, average price of product, average price of input for each practice, subsidies on input for each practice, significantly influenced the adoption of sustainable soil management practice by farmers. Also, it was found by the study that inadequate fund is the major constraint faced by the respondents in adopting sustainable soil management practices.

This study examined the productivity determinants of potato in Nigeria. The data for this study were extracted from secondary sources for a period of 1961-2016. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was adopted. The findings revealed that variables such as capital, land, fertilizer and prices were significant both in the long-run and short-run while rainfall and temperature were insignificant in the short-run. The study recommends among others that access to capital by the potato farmers should be increased by making more capital available for loans and grants at a reduced interest rate and that the land tenure system in operation should be made flexible to enable potato farmers access more land to enable mechanization and increased output.
