In Portugal, individuals aged 50? have an important role in the provision of co-residential care. This study aimed to rank Portugal relative to 15 European countries with regard to the prevalence of co-residential care (daily or almost daily personal care), and extra-residential help/care (household help and/or personal care) provided by individuals aged 50?, and determine the factors associated with the provision of these types of support in the Portuguese context. The study used data from the SHARE wave 4 project (2010)(2011) and was based on an analysis of variance and logistic regression models. Portugal differs from other European countries, as it has the highest rate of coresidential care (12.4 %) and the lowest rate of provision of extra-residential help/care (10.8 %). It is concluded that the quality of life (QoL) of Portuguese co-residential carers is lower than the QoL of non-carers, but extra-residential help/ care provided once a month or less has a positive impact on the QoL of the providers. Co-residential care and the provision of frequent extra-residential help/care (daily or weekly) were associated with a higher number of depressive symptoms. The results further showed that, in Portugal, coresidential carers and extra-residential helpers/carers have different socio-demographic, economic and health characteristics. This study demonstrates that it is important for scientific research to differentiate the type and frequency of informal support, since this can help us design policies to meet the specific needs of the various types of informal carers aged 50?.

Factors associated with Spanish older people’s membership in political organizations: the role of active aging activities

This study explores older people's membership in political organizations by using data from the Survey on older people 2010, carried out by Spain's National Institute for older people and social services. The objectives were to describe the extent of this kind of participation among Spaniards aged 65 and over, and to analyze the factors that are associated with it. Results show that only slightly less than 7 % of the sample belonged to a political organization. To analyze the factors related to this membership, a set of models of multivariate analyses were run, including socioeconomic resources and participation in other types of active aging activity (participation in leisure, learning, and productive activities). Educational level, leisure activities, learning activities, and only volunteering in the case of productive activities were found to be associated with membership in political organizations. Results provide partial support for the socioeconomic resources model and suggest that engagement in leisure activities, learning activities, and volunteering might have an enhancing effect on membership in political organizations.

RESUMENEl envejecimiento de la población es una de las características del mundo contemporáneo, y al parecer los países no tienen la clave para hacer frente a esta evolución de la mejor manera. La mayoría de los países mantienen un paradigma de envejecimiento que asocia la edad con el envejecimiento biológico y deterioro funcional. De hecho, muchos gobiernos introdujeron una línea artificial de edad social, la llamada edad de jubilación, la que supone una disminución de las capacidades funcionales intelectuales y productivas del ser humano en general, junto con una carga social para el estado. Sin embargo, este ciclo social de la vida no se corresponde necesariamente con disfuncionalidad biológica, lo que ha delineando un antes y después de este tiempo de vida, en los aspectos emocionales, de autoestima y de interrelación de las personas, que tradicionalmente se ha basado en una concepción socio-cultural denigrante de la vejez asociada con dependencia. Frente a este estigma conceptual, el presente artículo se propone analizar las múltiples voces que expresan los nuevos paradigmas de edad productiva y diversas formas de actividades de trabajo, con un impacto económico directo o indirecto, que los adultos mayores pueden realizar para mantenerse activos física y mentalmente y sentirse útiles a la sociedad. ABSTRACTThe aging of the population is characteristic for the contemporary world, and seemingly countries do not have the key to tackle this evolution in the best way. Most countries maintain an old aging paradigm that associates biological aging with functional impairment. In fact, many governments introduced an artificial age line, the so-called retirement age, at which it is assumed that a decline in the functionalintellectual and productive capacities of a human being emerge, generally coupled with a social burden for the state. However, the social life cycle not necessarily corresponds with biological dysfunctionality, delineating a before and after a lifetime in the emotional aspects, self-esteem and interrelation of a person, and which traditionally is based on a denigrating socio-cultural conception of old age associated with dependence. Right in front of this conceptual stigma, this paper attempts to analyze the multiple voices expressing new paradigms of productive age and the various forms of work activities, with direct or indirect economic impact, elderly people can accomplish and help them to stay physically and mentally active and useful to the society.
