This paper proposes a Computer-Aided tool aimed at increasing the efficiency of the Product Development Process by bridging the definition of system requirements to the preliminary assessment of the impacts of design choices on product characteristics. In details, it supports the designer in the definition of desired and undesired characteristics of a technical system throughout its entire lifecycle, according to a standardized set of criteria for eliciting and organizing knowledge from experts. The Computer-Aided tool also assist the user in managing the complex network between design variables and system requirements, characterizing their cause-and-effect relationships with the objective of determining critical parameters for product design. The paper also presents an exemplary application of the software prototype in the field of washing machines with the purpose of highlighting that a progressive integration of this kind of instruments into existing CAD/CAE tools also allows to promptly determine a connection between requirements and objectives of physically based simulations.

In this paper a 9-step method is proposed to study the evolution of technical systems. Merging the potential of TRIZ and patent analysis, a structured approach is defined to properly analyse the state of the art of a technology and retrieve useful insights to identify and structure new development strategies. Past-present evolutionary dynamics are quantitatively described, while indications for new possible development scenarios can be also extrapolated. Starting from a detailed breakdown of the technology under analysis, a list of evaluation parameters is defined to classify inventions and thus monitor the technology advancements by means of the TRIZ Laws of Engineering Systems Evolution. The aim of this study is to foster the diffusion of more reliable and systematic approaches to innovation especially in those industrial sectors where high risks and investment costs tend to favour short-term technological advances rather than long-term ones. Two case studies were developed within the context of the mining industry. Specifically, the study is part of a research project founded by the Chilean Economic Development Agency (CORFO) whose objective is to support companies of the Atacama region, in the identification of new technological opportunities to renew their production process.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the requirements of organizational knowledge management initiatives using requirements engineering techniques, identifying the optimal techniques configuration and serving as a management tool for knowledge engineers. Design/methodology/approach The method is selection attributes. Knowledge management enablers are characterized and mapped with the coverage capabilities of requirements engineering techniques, using the attributes of the elicited object and a box-plot analysis. The information is gathered from 280 references, 32 companies and 16 experts in requirements engineering. Findings Requirements of organizational knowledge management initiatives are got optimally by combining interviews, use cases, scenarios, laddering and focus group techniques. The requirements of structure and processes are more complex to identify, while culture requirements are the best covered. Research limitations/implications Knowledge management enablers are analyzed according to the current studies and comprehension of engineering techniques. Practical implications Knowledge engineers need to consider the coverage capabilities of engineering techniques to design an optimal requirement identification and meet the objectives of organizational knowledge acquisition initiatives. Requirement engineers can improve the requirements identification by a staged selection process. Social implications The requirements of knowledge management initiatives that impact the community can be identified and traced to ensure the knowledge objectives. Requirements related to culture and people, like shared values, beliefs, and behaviors, are also considered. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study about formal requirement identification of knowledge management initiatives in the organizational context, providing the optimal configuration. A novel staged process is proposed for requirements engineering techniques selection, analyzing the enablers at component level and identifying the attributes associated with the elicited object.
