Pre‐weaning nutrition has significant influence on post‐weaning performance of lambs. Strategic weaning management on milk replacer allowance at this phase can be a promising approach for harvesting desired carcass trait in finisher phase. Therefore, present experiment aimed economizing pre‐weaning weight gain in lambs by feeding milk replacer and subsequently minimizing weaning age. A study of 90 days duration was conducted to determine the production performance, nutrient utilization and rumen fermentation of lambs on milk replacer allowance at different weaning age. Sixty‐six Malpura lambs (10 days of age) were randomly divided into 3 equal groups. Lambs in control group were allowed conventional free suckling of dam up to 90 day of age, whereas lambs in the two treatment groups, that is W60 and W90 were offered milk replacer and weaned at 60 and 90 days, respectively. Lambs in all groups were offered ad‐libitum creep mixture, Ziziphus nummularia leaves, Vigna unguiculata hay and fresh Ailanthus excelsa leaves. Overall weight gain was 12.7 per cent higher (p < 0.05) in W90 than control whereas in W60 group it was statistically comparable with both control and W90 groups. Overall average daily gain was 12.1 per cent higher (p < 0.05) in W90 group as compared to control. In case of nutrient digestibility, there was significant depression of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) by 16.9, 17.2, 9.3 and 32.0 per cent in W60 than control; however, in W90, CP digestibility was higher (p < 0.05) than control and W60. Considering economic analysis, the net return obtained from W90 (90 days weaning plus milk replacer allowance) was more 20.0 per cent higher than control. Therefore, it can be concluded that lamb rearing on milk replacer and weaning at 90 days have a sustained positive effect on lambs’ production performance and is more profitable than the practice of milk replacer allowance and early weaning in semiarid conditions.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of protected or unprotected fats in the diet of feedlot lambs on feeding behavior, productive characteristics, carcass traits, and meat quality. Forty male Dorper × Santa Inês lambs (22.27 ± 2.79 kg) were randomly assigned to treatments in a completely randomized design. The experimental treatments consisted of five diets: no added fat (NAF), whole soybeans (WSB), calcium salts of fatty acids (CSFA), soybean oil (SO), and corn germ (CG). The total intake of dry matter (DMI) (p < 0.001) and neutral detergent fiber (NDFI) (p = 0.010) were higher in the CSFA and NAF diets. Feeding behavior, morphometric measurements, physicochemical characteristics, and centesimal composition of the Longissimus lumborum muscle were similar between treatments (p > 0.05). The CSFA diet provided higher production (p < 0.05) and better-quality carcasses. The inclusion of fat sources increased the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (p < 0.05). The use of calcium salts of fatty acids in feedlot lambs’ diets provides better quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the meat and carcass.

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi pemberian milk replacer yang mengandung minyak ikan lemuru dan canola terhadap hematologi anak domba Garut prasapih. Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan adalah rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) dengan tiga perlakuan dan enam ulangan. Anak domba prasapih dengan bobot badan berkisar 2,3±0,42 kg dibagi secara acak ke dalam kandang individu dan mendapatkan perlakuan P0 = susu domba yang berasal dari susu induk domba, P1 = milk replacer terformulasi susu sapi + kuning telur + minyak ikan + premix, dan P2 = milk replacer terformulasi susu sapi + kuning telur + minyak ikan + minyak canola + premix. Parameter yang diamati adalah hematologi yang terdiri atas kadar hemoglobin, hematokrit, eritrosit dan leukosit. Data hasil penelitian dianalisis sidik ragam. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa milk replacer yang diformulasi minyak ikan lemuru, dan atau minyak canola tidak berbeda terhadap hematologi anak domba prasapih dibandingkan dengan kontrol. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah minyak ikan lemuru dan atau minyak canola sebagai sumber lemak dapat digunakan dalam milk replacer domba tanpa adanya pengaruh negatif terhadap gambaran hematologi anak domba.Kata kunci: anak domba garut prasapih, hematologi, minyak canola, minyak ikan lemuru, milk replacerABSTRACTThe study aimed to evaluate the effect of a milk replacer containing lemuru fish oil and canola oil on hematology of Garut twin lambs before weaning. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments and six replicates. The pre-weaning lamb with average 2,3 ± 0,42 kg of body weight, which were randomly divided into individual pen with P0 = milk sourced from mother milk, P1 = milk sourced from milk replacer, cow milk+ lemuru fish oil + yolk + premix, P2 = milk sourced from milk replacer, cow milk + lemuru fish oil+canola oil+yolk+ premix. Measurements were taken on levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocyte, and leukocyte. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance. The results show that the milk replacer containing lemuru fish oil and or canola oil was similar to blood hematology of preweaning lambs compared to control.
