Digital twin-based sustainable intelligent manufacturing: a review

As the next-generation manufacturing system, intelligent manufacturing enables better quality, higher productivity, lower cost, and increased manufacturing flexibility. The concept of sustainability is receiving increasing attention, and sustainable manufacturing is evolving. The digital twin is an emerging technology used in intelligent manufacturing that can grasp the state of intelligent manufacturing systems in real-time and predict system failures. Sustainable intelligent manufacturing based on a digital twin has advantages in practical applications. To fully understand the intelligent manufacturing that provides the digital twin, this study reviews both technologies and discusses the sustainability of intelligent manufacturing. Firstly, the relevant content of intelligent manufacturing, including intelligent manufacturing equipment, systems, and services, is analyzed. In addition, the sustainability of intelligent manufacturing is discussed. Subsequently, a digital twin and its application are introduced along with the development of intelligent manufacturing based on the digital twin technology. Finally, combined with the current status, the future development direction of intelligent manufacturing is presented.

The purpose of this article is to point out the need to use software simulation tools in industrial practice to optimize the production process and assess the economic effectiveness of investment, including risk. The goal of the research is to find an optimal investment variant to ensure an increase in the production volume of at least 50% and to achieve the maximum economic efficiency of the investment, even considering the risk. The article presents a comprehensive approach that enables the achievement of the set research goal. The selection of the optimal version of the investment is carried out in three steps. Firstly, the versions of the investment variants are assessed from the production point of view using the program Tecnomatix Plant Simulation. Subsequently, the versions of the investment variants are assessed from an economic point of view and from a risk point of view. Economic efficiency is assessed using the financial criteria net present value (NPV), profitability index (PI), and discounted payback period (DPP), and risk analysis is carried out using Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, the accepted outputs are evaluated overall using a multi-criteria method, namely the method of partial order.

Optimisation of the Logistics System in an Electric Motor Assembly Flowshop by Integrating the Taguchi Approach and Discrete Event Simulation

An electric motor assembly flowshop (EMAF) is a type of classical mixed-product assembly line that uses automatic guided vehicle (AGV) systems for material handling. To optimise the logistics system configuration and alleviate the impact of the AGV parameters on the efficiency of the EMAF, a modelling and optimisation method based on discrete event simulation (DES) combined with Taguchi orthogonal experimental design was proposed. A DES model of the entire production process for the EMAF was constructed using the Tecnomatix Plant Simulation software package. After optimisation of the principal layout in the DES model, the number of assembly stations was decreased from 13 to 9, and the balance ratio was increased from 65.08% to 84.65%. In addition, the combination of the Taguchi method with the DES model was further developed to achieve the optimal parameter combination of the AGVs in order to allow the AGVs to operate more efficiently under various states. The final overall theoretical throughput was increased from 134 to 295 units within the seven-hour observation period.
