“…In the present article, which really is concerned first and foremost with a slight restatement of "classical" phonetics, I shall adopt the organogenetic, the production side of speech rather than the perception side. It is important to keep in mind, however, that there is a good deal of evidence that we hear with a kind of kinesthetic hearing, in which the proprioceptive feedback of the organs of speech is involved in perception, the so-called "motor" theory of speech perception (for a good overview and a contrary opinion, see Lane 1970), and that it is well established that we hear our own voice through bone conduction (Bekesy 1962).…”
