Production and evaluation of biosynthesized cellulose tubes as promising nerve guides for spinal cord injury treatment

Abstract: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a central nervous disorder that can result in permanent motor and sensory damage due to a severed communication pathway. Although there is currently no effective treatment, nerve guide tubes have been used to bridge the injured stumps and act as drug delivery systems. In this study, biosynthesized cellulose (BC) nerve guides were prepared, and nerve growth factor (NGF)—a model growth factor—was incorporated into the tubular nerve guide in order to obtain a nerve guide/drug delivery … Show more

“…Neurite stimulation was provided by NGF-loaded BCTs. 80 BCTs that had been loaded with NGF had good mechanical characteristics; in particular, BCTs that had been cultured for 22 days (BCTs22) had a Young's Modulus that was comparable to that of the spinal cord. NGF also remained bioactive on PC12 cells following BC tube removal.…”

“…BCTs22 enabled an NGF-controlled release for 7 days, with an initial (8 h) burst release, due to the release of NGF molecules from the outer tube surface. Furthermore, NGF maintained its bioactivity on PC12 cells after release from BC tubes [ 81 ].…”
