Production and cytogenetics of Triticum aestivum L. hybrids with some rhizomatous Agropyron species

Abstract: Intergeneric hybrids between Triticum aestivum L. and conventional rhizomatous Agropyron species were produced in variable frequencies. They were recovered in high percentage frequencies for T. aestivum cultivars with A. acutum (14.6%), A. intermedium (48.0%), A. pulcherrimum (53.3%), and A. trichophorum (46.6%). The crossability percentages with the highly crossable cultivar 'Chinese Spring' for these Agropyron species accessions were 33.12%, 65.0%, 53.3%, and 65.4%, respectively. Autosyndetic associations of… Show more

“…Subsequent to their cytogenetic study in 1987 of the hybrids between wheat and the caespitose species of Thinopyrum, Mujeeb-Kazi et al (1989) also investigated the cytogenetics of the hybrids between wheat and the rhizomatous wheat grasses. The hybrid between Triticum aestivum cv.…”

“…Agropyron has been confirmed in experiments by some authors (White 1940;Smith 1943;Mujeeb-Kazi 1989). Success in such crosses was achieved only recently: hexaploid wheat has been reported to be successfully crossed with tetraploid Agropyron species [A. cristatum, A. michnoi, A. desertorum, andA.…”

“…First Triticum-Leymus hybrid involved Leymus arenarius (J1J1J2J2N1N1N2N2) (Petrova, 1960) . Eight species of this genus have now been hybridized with wheat (Mujeeb-Kazi et al ., 1989 ;Plourde et al, 1989aPlourde et al, , 1989bPlourde et al ., 1992). Smith (1942) was unsuccessful in crossing El .…”
