The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth variables of eggplants seedlings produced in substrates with different compositions in agricultural residues. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with five treatments and ten replicates, with the following treatments: T0= Bioplant commercial substrate (control); T1= 10% of moinha (dried residue of coffee beans) + 15% of coconut fiber + 5% of eggshell + 70% of commercial substrate; T2= 20% of moinha + 15% of coconut fiber + 5% of eggshell + 60% of commercial substrate; T3= 30% of moinha + 15% of coconut fiber + 5% of eggshell + 50% of commercial substrate; T4= 40% of moinha+ 15% of coconut fiber + 5% of eggshell + 40% of commercial substrate. The evaluated variables were electric conductivity of the substrate, number of leaves, plant height, stem diameter; and fresh and dry biomass of shoot, root, and of the whole plant. Growing doses of moinha provide increased electrical conductivity in substrate. The treatment groups containing increasing proportions of moinha in the substrate composition present the highest values of growth variables in relation to the commercial substrate. Except shoot, root and total dry biomass, the substrate with 10 and 20% of moinha have the highest values of analyzed variables in eggplant seedlings.

RESUMENLa berenjena es una hortaliza con alta demanda en el departamento de Córdoba (Colombia), donde tiene importancia social y económica. El sistema actual de producción presenta algunos limitantes tecnológicos, uno de ellos es la producción de plántulas, y la de calidad de los sustratos. Con el fin de evaluar los sustratos disponibles de la región, se realizó un diseño completamente al azar con siete tratamientos, correspondientes a mezclas de sustratos (T1 = 50% aluvión + 50% casacarilla de arroz; T2 = 40% aluvión +40% cascarilla de arroz + 20% lombriabono; T3 = 40% aluvión + 40% cascarilla de arroz + 20% gallinaza; T4 = 40% arena +40% aluvión + 20% lombriabono; T5 = 40% arena + 40% aluvión + 20% gallinaza; T6 = 40% aluvión + 40% fibra de coco + 20% lombriabono y T7 = 40% aluvión + 40% fibra de coco + 20% gallinaza), con seis repeticiones. Se utilizaron bolsas de polipropileno de 6 x 8 pulgadas y semillas del cultivar CO-029. Los sustratos constituidos por mezcla de lombriabono o gallinaza, arena y aluvión obtuvieron plántulas de mayor tamaño y óptima calidad; mientras que la cascarilla de arroz o fibra de coco, generaron plántulas de inferior calidad agronómica. Production and efficiency of water usage in capsicum crops under notillage and conventional planting systems 1 Produção e eficiência do uso da água na cultura do pimentão nos sistemas de plantio direto e convencional ABSTRACT -This study aimed to evaluate the effect of no-tillage and conventional planting systems, and of weedmanagement strategies on water-usage efficiency in capsicum crops. The experiment was carried out at the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, using a split-plot layout in a randomized block design with four replications. The tillage systems were evaluated in the plots, and three weed-management strategies evaluated in the subplots (soil cover with polyethylene film, and with and without weeds). The density and dry mass of the weeds, the commercial and total productivity, and the daily water consumption were all evaluated. It was found that the no-tillage system reduced the density and dry mass of the weeds in comparison to conventional systems, and the interference of these plants reduced commercial productivity under both planting systems. The strategy of weeds under a no-tillage system, despite a higher water consumption, showed a productivity and efficiency of water usage superior to those of the strategies of polyethylene film both under no-tillage and conventional systems, and of weeds under a conventional tillage system. Weed control.RESUMO -Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito dos sistemas de plantio direto e convencional e as estratégias de manejo de plantas daninhas na eficiência do uso da água pela cultura do pimentão. O experimento foi conduzido na Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido, em Mossoró-RN, utilizando o esquema de parcelas subdivididas, no delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os sistemas de plantio foram avaliados nas parcelas, e nas subparcelas três estratégias de manejo de plantas daninhas (cobertura do solo com filme de polietileno, capinado e sem capinas). Avaliou-se a densidade e massa seca das plantas daninhas, a produtividade comercial, total e o consumo diário de água. Verificou-se que o sistema de plantio direto reduziu a densidade e a massa seca das plantas daninhas em relação ao plantio convencional e a interferência destas reduziu a produtividade comercial em ambos os sistemas de cultivo. O tratamento com capinas nos sistema de plantio direto, apesar do maior consumo de água, apresentou produtividade e eficiência no uso da água superior aos tratamentos com filme de polietileno nos sistemas de plantio direto e convencional e o capinado no plantio convencional.
