The Brazilian Cerrado, a global biodiversity hotspot, has been widely converted by agricultural expansion and pasture establishment. As a result of these activities, several plant species have experienced population declines such as pequi (Caryocar brasiliense). We analyzed the feasibility of economic use of C. brasiliense based on population structure and fruit productivity. The average fruit production was high and significantly different between 2013 (515 fruits ind-1) and 2014 (344 fruits ind-1) (t = 2.32, p < 0.01), with 33% less fruit production in 2014. The canopy area (r2 = 0.22, p < 0.05) was the only population parameter related to productivity (2013). One hectare may yield an average of one ton of complete fruits, which is equivalent to up to 16 liters of pulp oil. The family income obtained with oil pulp sale could up to R$ 1,080 (US$ 327). We support the hypothesis that high pequi fruit productivity makes the extraction of this resource viable, especially for giant earthworm extractors.

The study of the genetic and phenotypic variability of the populations of Caryocar brasiliense Camb. assists in strategies for conservation and breeding of the specie. The objective of this work was to characterize the genetic diversity through the physical characteristics of pequi fruits of two populations through uni and multivariate analysis, as well as the implications in their domestication and breeding. Fruits were harvested from 20 mother trees (ten fruits per mother tree) from two populations in the state of Minas Gerais (Curvelo and São Gonçalo do Rio Preto Municipalities) during the years 2010, 2011 and 2012. The data were submitted to analysis of variance using a hierarchical classification model. An analysis of clusters and main components was used for studying the divergences. The effects of the populations were not significant for all the characters analyzed in isolation. The gathering of pequi mother trees shown by multivariate analysis did not correspond to the grouping established by the populations. Selection for breeding and/or preservation purposes should concentrate efforts on fewer populations with larger numbers of mother trees per population. Selection of mother trees with higher fruits and thicker pulp fruits among them, even by visual evaluations only, is recommend in sampling mother trees for breeding purposes.

RESUMOEste estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a regeneração natural em três áreas de cerradão sob diferentes tipos de interferência, em Jataí -GO. Foram alocadas 30 parcelas de 5 x 5 metros, sendo 10 em cada área. Estas áreas foram denominadas como preservada, pastoreio e queimada. Foram levantados todos os indivíduos com DAP ≤ 5 cm e altura ≥ 30 cm. As espécies foram classificadas quanto a composição florística e a diversidade da regeneração natural foi estimada pelo índice de diversidade de Shannon e pelo índice de equabilidade de Pielou. Para avaliar as possíveis diferenças entre as médias das variáveis: densidade, diâmetro médio à altura do solo, altura média e riqueza nas áreas em diferentes condições avaliadas (preservada, queimada e pastoreio), aplicou-se o Teste t (p<0,05). Nas áreas que sofreram interferência (pastoreio e queimada), as plantas em regeneração natural tiveram menor desenvolvimento em altura e diâmetro em relação a área preservada. A interferência do gado nos fragmentos de cerradão estudados é mais impactante. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: cerradão, conservação, impacto ambiental.
