Processing of Raw GNSS Reflectometry Data From TDS-1 in a Backscattering Configuration

Abstract: Global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) has found many applications in the field of Earth observation including ocean wind-speed detection, ice altimetry, soil moisture monitoring, and more. The main focus of GNSS-R research to date has been on forward-scattered reflections, but theoretical work has proposed a backscattering regime and associated new application opportunities, including marine target detection. This article discusses the methods and results of processing the U.K. TechDemoSat-… Show more

“…Although mainly used for ocean surface wind measurements [35], the TDS-1 DDM products have been also analyzed for some other remote sensing applications, such as ocean altimetry [36], soil moisture [37,38], sea ice detection and classification [39][40][41][42], ice sheet sensing [43][44][45] and freeze-thaw detection [46,47]. In addition to the standard DDM products, TDS-1 mission also collected the raw IF samples of the direct and reflected signals occasionally, from which new GNSS-R applications have been demonstrated [24,32,48].…”

“…Moreover, the complex waveforms are generated only with the forward scattering configuration, i.e., corresponding to the signal reflected around the specular point. However, the waveform or DDM can be also generated for the signal scattered from other directions (e.g., backscattering in [48]) or staring at fixed surface regions (e.g., in [34]) by only tuning the open-loop tracking model. -…”

“…Now considering the ships in the water. When researchers study the ice edge in the Ocean, they use a trihedral model with an approximately infinite plane to calculate the RCS [20]. Whereas in our experiments the ships are in freshwater, and the geometry relationship among the GEO satellite, ships, and receiver are configured as quasi monostatic radar, so for simplification, the surface of cargo ship can be modeled as a trihedral corner reflector as shown in Figure 19.…”
