Processing of Polymer‐Derived Ceramic Composite Coatings on Steel

Abstract: Polymer-derived ceramic composites are being investigated as environmental barrier coatings to protect stainless steel from oxidation and carburization. Coatings have been produced using poly(hydridomethylsiloxane) as a preceramic polymer and titanium disilicide as an expansion agent. Processing parameters have been optimized and a relationship has been derived to predict the final coating thickness based on slurry viscosity and dip coating withdrawal speed. Microstructural analysis reveals a composite coating… Show more

“…Polymer derived ceramic (PDC) composite coatings are promising candidates to be used as alternative environmental barrier coatings for corrosion and oxidation protection of metals [12]. A new approach based on development of oxidation resistant PDC coating systems through pyrolysis of suitable predominantly silicon containing precursors such as polysiloxanes [13], polycarbosilanes [14] or polysilazanes [15,16,17], which could act as a diffusion barrier to oxygen was reported. The precursor techniques facilitate relatively low-cost and easy approach to produce polymeric and ceramic coatings, which in turn provide excellent oxidation and corrosion protection of metal substrates.…”

“…The coatings are mainly obtained from silicon-based precursors such as polysiloxanes (Torrey and Bordia 2008b), or polysilazanes (Günthner et al 2009a). In order to use preceramic polymers for coating processes, either liquid state or solubility in organic solvents is necessary.…”

“…The Si-C-O ceramic coatings were made using polymer-precursor processing. This method is a novel way to process low dimensional ceramics such as fibers and coatings, sometimes collectively referred to as the polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs The Si-C-O ceramic coatings investigated in this research were made using processing methods based on polymer-precursors by Prof. Raj Bordia's group at the University of Washington, Seattle-WA, [152][153][154][155]. The coating thickness is approximately 15 µm.…”
