Processing and mechanical properties of novel Al-W composites with ordered mesostructure

Abstract: Novel high-density aluminum (Al)-tungsten (W) fiber composites in the tubular shape with highly ordered tungsten fibers in axial and hoop directions were processed in the solid state using the combination of cold isostatic pressing and hot isostatic pressing. Half of the specimens were additionally heat treated after hot isostatic pressing to regain the properties of aluminum 6061-T6. The strength of both types of samples was investigated under quasistatic compression. Samples after additional heat treatment h… Show more

“…More recently, control of fragmentation of the RSM was attempted by varying the particle size and, even more interestingly, structure of the composite material, which can be changed replacing a powder with fibers . Composites with tungsten fibers embedded in aluminum were prepared using a combination of cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and HIP, which could be followed by an additional heat treatment to harden the aluminum matrix . Prepared materials contained mesostructures including tungsten fibers embedded in aluminum while being placed strategically in both hoop and axial directions, as shown in Figure .…”

“…An SRM designed in this fashion preserves intrinsic grain-scale properties of dissimilarity and reactivity from which a variety of fine fragmentation mechanisms could be anticipated. In a structural discontinuity mechanism [32][33][34][35][36], the grain-scale discontinuities in acoustic impedance, hardness and other physical properties dominated at the interfaces between dissimilar granular ingredients within an SRM solid. Consequently, on the two sides of an interface, explosive loading shock dynamics resulted in local differences in temperature, shear stress, strain and, later, acceleration from dissimilar inertia, leading to fine fragments.…”

“…Ren et al [6] studied the influences of W content on the dynamic mechanical properties, impact threshold and total energy release of Al/PTFE/W reactive materials by using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). Chiu et al [7,8] prepared tubular high-density Al/W/fibre composites with high order axial and circumferential W fibres by the combination of cold isostatic pressing and hot isostatic pressing and studied the strength of the two samples under quasi-static compression. The quasi-static compressive tests of two kinds of PTFE/Al/W reactive materials were conducted by Xu et al [9]; the results show that the sintered sample has higher failure stress and fracture toughness than that of the unsintered sample.…”
