Processes and Models for Serious Game Design and Development

Abstract: Abstract.A serious game needs to combine a number of different aspects to help the end user in reaching the desired effects. This requires incorporating a broad range of different aspects in the design, stemming from a broad range of different fields of expertise. For designers, developers, researchers, and other stakeholders it is not straightforward how to organize the design and development process, to make sure that these aspects are properly addressed. In this chapter we will discuss a number of ways of o… Show more

“…For end-users to reach the desired positive effect from HCI-SGs, the latter need to integrate a supportive system that merges multidisciplinary fields. It still remains an open problem to all game stakeholders (i.e., designers, developers, researchers) how the design and development processes have to be organized to ensure that all different aspects of the game are properly addressed ( Braad et al, 2016 ). In order to address this issue, the present study explores the practical and direct implications of its findings on the design/development processes of HCI-SGs within the i-PROGNOSIS PGS framework.…”

“…The learning model of a serious game should focus on the following events [16]: gaining students' attention; informing users about the purposes of the game; recalling what has already been studied; consolidation of new educational material; availability of clear training guidelines; efficiency of the training process; providing feedback; evaluation of the effectiveness of the use of serious play; improving the means of retaining attention and ensuring quality transfer of new knowledge. Models of design for a serious educational game [17] emphasize the educational pedagogical orientation or the motivational characteristics of the game or integrate these 2 approaches.…”

“…Choices made at the game design stage are a critical consideration which are likely to affect the effectiveness of an SG, subsequently game designers look for methods to inform design choices. A variety of development approaches and pedagogical models are available [93], however, it is generally accepted that game characteristics and particularly game mechanics can significantly affect learning outcomes [91], [92], [94].…”

“…However, moving beyond medium focused proof of concept arguments to game characteristics that affect cognitive consequences is recommended [92]. As such it is necessary to focus on design decisions which optimise learning effectiveness, but game design as a second order design problem demonstrates how complex it is to predict the effect of design decisions on player experience [93].…”
