Process Intensification via Membrane Reactors, the DEMCAMER Project

Abstract: This paper reports the findings of a FP7 project (DEMCAMER) that developed materials (catalysts and membranes) and new processes for four industrially relevant reaction processes. In this project, active, stable, and selective catalysts were developed for the reaction systems of interest and their production scaled up to kg scale (TRL5 (TRL: Technology Readiness Level)). Simultaneously, new membranes for gas separation were developed; in particular, dense supported thin palladium-based membranes for hydrogen s… Show more

“…In their report for the DEMCAMER project, Gallucci et al 79 studied MIEC stability from a mechanical perspective. They attempted to create a prototype for an OCM membrane reactor consisting of Mn−Na−W/SiO 2 catalyst packed inside a hollow fiber BaCo x Fe y Zr z O 3-δ dense membrane and scale it up to a system consisting of 20 membrane achieved a methane conversion of 55% with a C 2 yield of 22%.…”

“…The employment of oxygen membranes has a number of advantages. For example, it intensifies the process for both air separation and OCM reaction being conducted in a single unit and consequently simplifies upstream processing . It also aids to conduct OCM reaction in a much safer environment, where methane and oxygen gas phase reactions are eliminated .…”

“…Thus, process intensification is needed to overcome some disadvantages of the established plant designs and can lead to a more sustainable and energy effective overall process [9]. Numerous research activities in the field of process intensification are related to membrane reactors [10,11]. Membrane reactors can provide distribution or extraction of intermediates, reactants, or products to assure a more advantages concentration and temperature regime than conventional reactor designs [12].…”

“…Among the different membrane reactors reported in the scientific literature [1,2,3], the palladium-based ones are the most commonly used when hydrogen is the product to be separated [4,5,6,7,8,9].…”
