Procedures for central auditory processing screening in schoolchildren

Abstract: At the international level, the screening test for auditory processing and Feather Squadron batteries stand out as the most comprehensive evaluation of hearing skills. At the national level, there is a paucity of studies that use methods evaluating more than four skills, and are normalized by age group. The use of simplified auditory processing assessment and questionnaires can be complementary in the search for an easy access and low-cost alternative in the auditory screening of Brazilian schoolchildren. “…However, ASPA is currently the only instrument validated in Brazil with feasibility for use within schools. Even considering the international scenario, there is no consensus on the most efficient CAP screening methods, this being a current and relevant theme of researches aimed at the validation of instruments that address the hearing mechanisms recommended by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) (6,7,14) .…”

“…A recent revision study highlighted the shortage of screening methods for the assessment of central auditory skills, emphasizing the importance of the use of specific auditory tasks combined with questionnaires (6) . Thus, in the school context, there is a considerable interest in auditory screening methods to help identify, quickly and effectively, children at risk for central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) (7) , the use of the Auditory Processing Simplified Assessment (ASPA) standing out in Brazil (8) .…”

“…Atualmente, há escassez de estudos que apontam métodos de triagem auditiva sensíveis para identificação de alterações no PAC (7,8) . Os instrumentos citados como forma de rastreio para detectar possíveis TPAC são: os procedimentos de triagem por meio de um questionário (8,9) ; triagem por meio de testes auditivos, ou ainda por uma combinação destes (10) .…”
