Problems, potentials and future of industrial crystallization

Abstract: This review discusses important research developments and arising challenges in the field of industrial crystallization with an emphasis on recent problems. The most relevant areas of research have been identified. These are the prediction of phase diagrams; the prediction of effects of impurities and additives; the design of fluid dynamics; the process control with process analytical technologies (PAT) tools; the polymorph and solvate screening; the stabilization of non-stable phases; and the product design. … Show more

“…Antisolvent crystallization plays an important role in various fields as an effective separation and crystal manufacturing technology (e.g., inorganics, pharmaceuticals, food, and thermosensitive substances). Because it can be operated under ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, antisolvent crystallization is environment friendly and low energy consumption .…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6][7] All these attempts are aimed at establishing a moderate nucleation environment with low nucleation barrier to promoting nucleation under controllable conditions, which dominated the crystal size distribution (CSD) and crystal habit to a large extent and could strongly influence end-product quality, functionality, and downstream separation processes. [8][9][10] In recent decade, with the development of membrane material and membrane process research, membrane distillation crystallization process was proposed for hen egg white lysozyme crystallization. [11][12][13] This innovative method presented an impressive performance on the reduction of the biological macromolecules nucleation barrier with various tailored membranes.…”

“…Given that crystallization is considered as an effective process for the purification of solid products from solutions, it is always sequenced as the final unit operation that affects the purity and quality of products directly in the manufacture process [7]. In order to optimize the crystallization process, solubility data are necessary for the thermodynamics and kinetics investigation during the crystallization.…”
