Problems and solutions for patients with fibromyalgia: Building new helping relationships

Abstract: The majority of patients' problems were associated with their previous history and the onset of fibromyalgia; which may be related to trauma in adolescence, early adulthood or later. The solutions provided during the groups appeared to be accepted by the participants. These findings can improve the self-management of fibromyalgia patients by helping to enhance adaptive behaviours and incorporating the female gender approach.

“…The studies do not show differences in uncertainty regarding fibromyalgia between men and women, perhaps due to the lack of studies in men; only one study with men in this review met criteria for inclusion [39], and in those studies that involved men and women, there were a greater proportion of women than men, as can be seen in Table 1 [8,23,35]. Although one author concluded that FMS has a greater impact in men and it causes them to seek medical retirement earlier than women, this has not been proven with a significant sample size or in a qualitative study [43].…”

“…We can affirm the existence of the first category of the Mishel model in the reviewed studies. The perception of patients with FMS, on the basis of initial experience, even before knowing the diagnosis, is similar [4,6,10,34,35,37,43,44], highlighting the difficulties that they have to understand the symptoms, their uncertainty with regard to the diagnosis and uncertainty about the complexity of treatment. It is important to consider the importance of the history of uncertainty in chronic diseases [15,45].…”

“…[ 22 ] To tackle this problem, interdisciplinary care programs have been developed to promote the health of people with fibromyalgia. [ 23 24 25 ] These programs are directed to care optimization by means of instruction to patients provided by several professionals from different areas of knowledge, guiding them on how to control the pain and cope with the problems associated with their lifestyle. [ 26 ] These professionals interact to develop care praxis from the interdisciplinarity perspective, gathering people with different viewpoints and knowledge.…”
