Problem-solving set and functional fixedness: A contextual dependency hypothesis.

Abstract: Problem-solving set and functional fixedness (f.f.) are usually considered to be manifestations of the same basic phenomena, viz. the effects of immediate or past experience on subsequent performance in a problem-solving task. However, it has been shown that certain variables have different effects on set and f.f-, suggesting that the two involve dissimilar underlying mechanisms. The experimental situations in which set and f.f. have been studied are reviewed and the findings compared. A contextual dependency h… Show more

“…According to Arnon & Kreitler (1984), Functional Fixedness consists in "focusing on some function of an object while overlooking another necessary for problem solving" (p. 11). This process was clearly highlighted by the well known candle experiment of Duncker (1945) showing that when subjects are presented both an object and its functional purpose in a given activity context (Kearsley, 1975), the extrapolation towards another functional purpose for the object by the subjects is not trivial.…”

“…This concept was introduced by K. Duncker (1945), who considered functional fixedness as one of the most powerful "antagonists" of creative thinking. In academic literature, numerous synonyms of this term have been introduced, such as "problem-solving set" (Kearsley, 1975), "rigidity" (Leach, 1967), "difficulty in re-structuring" (Wertheimer, 1959). At the same time, there is a lack of research systematizing results of the classic theoretical and empirical studies on functional fixedness.…”
