Probiotics in acne skin care. A review of the latest scientific reports

Abstract: Probiotics are live microorganisms that have a positive effect on the host organism. They are used in the food, pharmacological and cosmetology industries. The basic function of probiotics is prevention and prophylaxis against the induction and development of disease entities. An important factor is the influence of probiotic bacteria on the etiopathogenesis of acne formation, reducing the amount of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as other skin diseases, such as psoriasis, allergies, and atopic dermatitis … Show more

“…The scientific works of domestic and foreign authors include indications of the relationship between the development, clinical course and severity of acne with the state of microbiota of the skin and large intestine [5,6,7,8]. In recent years, significant attention has been paid to the study of the role of chronic focal infection in the pathogenesis of acne, in particular intestinal dysbiosis, as one of the probable reasons for the development of secondary immunodeficiency in such patients [3,4,9]. At the same time, qualitative and quantitative changes in the microbiocenosis of the skin lead to a decrease in the local antimicrobial resistance of the body, while the most significant disorders are usually detected in people with severe, often relapsing forms of the disease [10,11,12,13,14].…”

“…For several years in cosmetology, probiotics have been added to everyday care products. Their main role is to protect against harmful pathogens and reduce inflammation [ 76 ]. Fragments of cell walls and inanimate bacteria are contained in such cosmetic products as serums, ointments, creams, body balms, body gels, and shampoos.…”

“…It was also proved that the colon microbiota plays an important role in the formation of homeostasis and immune response [3,4]. A relationship between the conditions of the colon microbiota, indices of systemic immunity and phagocytosis and nature of clinical manifestations of acne justifying differentiated administration of probiotics and immunomodulation therapy in the comprehensive therapy were found [1,6,10,13]. According to modern standards [2,6,8,10], the treatment of acne is carried out in various ways: patients with mild acne are prescribed an external antibacterial and anti-inflammatory therapy (topical antibiotics, topical retinoid medicines, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide) only, but in case of moderate and severe forms, comprehensive treatment including systemic antibacterial, immunotropic, anti-inflammatory drugs, oral retinoid, low-dose birth control pills and other therapies are applied.…”

The Objective of the study is to determine the evolution of phagocytosis indices in patients with acne under different comprehensive treatments, using oral antibiotics, immunotherapy (PRP-therapy), probiotics, low-dose birth control pills and IPL-therapy…”
