Probiotics Dietary Supplementation for Modulating Endocrine and Fertility Microbiota Dysbiosis

Abstract: Human microbiota seems to play a key role in endocrine and reproductive systems. Fortunately, microbiota reproductive dysbiosis start to be treated by probiotics using typical species from genus Lactobacillus. This work presents the compiled and analysed results from the most up-to-date information from clinical trials regarding microbiota, fertility, probiotics and oral route administration, reviewing open access scientific documents. These studies analyse the clinical impact of probiotics administered on sev… Show more

“…Except for these two studies [ 51 , 52 ], the mean administration time found in the review was 1 week. When we compare these data with the oral administration of probiotics in reproductive disorders [ 45 ], it is observed that the range of CFU/day administered is similar to that of vaginal probiotics, from 1 × 10 6 CFU/day to 3 × 10 10 CFU/day. However, in terms of treatment duration, the differential range is much more pronounced, varying from 3 to 24 weeks; this could be due to oral probiotics needing a longer duration to reach the natural reproductive site of colonization compared to the more localized site-direct administration for vaginal probiotics.…”

“…The first probiotics were composed predominantly of members of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, but they showed a lack of precision when targeting a specific biological function [136]. In the male reproductive field, the use of probiotics and synbiotics (formulations including probiotics and prebiotics) was related to improved semen quality [137,138], and in females the protective role of probiotics in relation to vaginal infections was observed [70,139]. A recent study aimed to select potential probiotic strains from vaginal samples to improve the health of the female reproductive tract, and selected the Lactobacillus rhamnosus BPL005 strain for its capacity to reduce pH and produce short chain fatty acids, protective effects against pathogen colonisation and lactate production [140].…”

“…The normal gastrointestinal microflora of the humans is populated with microflora that belongs to the genus Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium . They are safe and widely used in yogurts and other dairy products (López-Moreno and Aguilera 2020 ). Probiotics play a role in balancing the host defensive immune response, thereby stimulating mucosal barrier function and modulating the immune system (El Hage et al 2017 ).…”
