“…The standards for tolerable regurgitation post-repair have become increasingly more stringent in recent years with clinical experience. Mitral regurgitation with a colour flow jet area greater than 10% of left atrial area or more than 2.0 cm 2 immediately post-cardiopulmonary bypass is now felt to be indicative of failure of repair, necessitating a further procedure (Kay et al 1994, Obata et al 1994. The accuracy of assessment of mitral regurgitation, and the colour flow threshold used to indicate acceptable results, following valve repair, impacts directly on patient post-operative outcome.…”
