To understand the characteristics of longitudinal grouting quality, this paper developed a stress wave-based active sensing method using piezoceramic transducers to detect longitudinal grouting quality of the prestressed curved tendon ducts. There were four lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers installed in the same longitudinal plane. One of them, mounted on the bottom of the curved tendon duct, was called as an actuator for generating stress waves. The other three, pasted on the top of the curved tendon duct, were called as sensors for detecting the wave responses. The experimental process was divided into five states during the grouting, which included 0%, 50%, 75%, 90%, and 100% grouting. The voltage signals, power spectral density (PSD) energy and wavelet packet energy were adopted in this research. Experimental results showed that all the amplitudes of the above analysis indicators were small before the grouting reached 90%. Only when the grouting degree reached the 100% grouting, these parameters increased significantly. The results of different longitudinal PZT sensors were mainly determined by the distance from the generator, the position of grouting holes, and the fluidity of grouting materials. These results showed the longitudinal grouting quality can be effectively evaluated by analyzing the difference between the signals received by the PZT transducers in the curved tendon duct. The devised method has certain application value in detecting the longitudinal grouting quality of prestressed curved tendon duct.

Fatigue cracking induced by vehicle load is a prevalent problem in orthotropic steel decks. In addition, pavement debonding in steel bridge decks is another familiar issue resulting from low slip resistance in the faying surface between the steel and asphalt concrete. The present study proposed a strengthening method that uses ultra-high performance concrete to stiffen a repeatedly maintained cable-stayed bridge in order to help address these two problems. The existing issues of the real bridge and the corresponding causes were investigated. Following this, an ultra-high performance concrete paving system was designed to improve the stiffness of the orthotropic steel decks. For this paving system, a 45-mm ultra-high performance concrete layer was connected to the deck by welded shear studs. The local stresses at the typical vulnerable fatigue cracking points were determined by means of a finite element model and of a field loading test to evaluate the strengthening effect. The results showed that this strengthening method can prevent the propagation of fatigue cracks. The local stresses of the U-ribs and diaphragms were reduced by 45.4% and 40.0%, respectively. The repaired bridge has sufficient resistance against fatigue cracking based on the in situ observations.

The corrosion morphology and the mechanical behavior of corroded prestressing strands are investigated in the present study. Nineteen corroded strands are obtained through controlling stress level, corrosion time and chloride ion concentration under artificial climate conditions. A total of 119 corrosion pits are counted to investigate the geometric morphology of corrosion pits. A depth-width ratio parameter is first defined to describe the distribution law of corrosion pits, which obeys the lognormal distribution. A tension test is conducted to investigate the mechanical behavior of corroded strands. The fracture morphology and micro-cracks of corroded steel wires are observed by the scanning electron microscopy. A constitutive model is proposed to predict the stress-strain curve of corroded prestressing strands and verified by the experimental results. Results show that the maximum corrosion loss of strand increases by 4.91% when the stress level changes from 45% to 75% of strand yield strength. The high stress level can promote the propagation of corrosion micro-cracks on strand surface. The propagation of corrosion micro-cracks has a significant effect on ultimate strength of strand, while has a little effect on elastic modulus. The proposed model can give an accurate prediction for the stress-strain of corroded prestressing strand.
