Drawing from Psychology of Working Theory (PWT), the current study sampled 254 college students from impoverished families in China and examined their perceptions of access to future decent work as predicted by subjective social status and marginalization and mediated by work volition and career adaptability. As impoverished college students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and thus cannot afford college expenses, understanding their perception regarding future careers echoes the call for renewing the focus on equity and diversity within vocational psychology. Findings supported subjective social status as an indirect predictor of perceptions of future decent work via work volition. Work volition and career adaptability directly predicted perceptions of future decent work. Additionally, there is a significant conditional indirect effect between subjective social status, work volition, and perceptions of future decent work. Specifically, the effect was only significant for first-year students. Overall, this study adds new evidence on the applicability of the PWT among student populations. Implications for career researchers, vocational counselors, and student affairs professionals are provided.

This prospective study was designed to propose a novel method of assessing proactive personality by combining text mining technology and Item Response Theory (IRT) to measure proactive personality more efficiently. We got freely expressed texts (essay question text dataset and social media text dataset) and item response data on the topic of proactive personality from 901 college students. To enhance validity and reliability, three different approaches were employed in the study. In Method 1, we used item response data to develop a proactive personality evaluation model based on IRT. In Method 2, we used freely expressed texts to develop a proactive personality evaluation model based on text mining. In Method 3, we utilized the text mining results as the prior information for the IRT estimation and built a proactive personality evaluation model combining text mining and IRT. Finally, we evaluated those three approaches via the confusion matrix indicators. The major result revealed that (1) the combined method based on essay question text, micro-blog text with pre-estimated IRT parameters performed the highest accuracy of 0.849; (2) the combined method using essay question text and pre-estimated IRT parameters performed the highest sensitivity of 0.821; (3) the text classification method based on essay question text had the best performance on the specificity of 0.959; and (4) if the models were considered comprehensively, the combined method using essay question text, micro-blog text, and pre-estimated IRT parameters achieved the best performance. Thus, we concluded that the novel combined method was significantly better than the other two traditional methods based on IRT and text mining.

College is a key period for students' specialty study and development, and an important stage of career exploration. We examined the relationship between proactive personality, career adaptability, and perceived social support and specialty identity among 610 Chinese college students. The mediating effect of perceived social support was greater than that of specialty identity. Therefore, providing more social support to college students may be more conducive to increasing their career adaptability. The chain intermediary effect of perceived social support indicated that specialty identity is also significant. Thus, college students with a more proactive personality can perceive more emotional support and study harder, thereby increasing their specialty identity and career adaptability. Results of this study can help guide universities in offering courses and activities that promote students' career adaptability with perceived social support and specialty identity in mind. Results also provide a model for future study of the influence of proactive personality on college student career adaptability.
