Over the last decade, researchers have used virtual-and mixed-reality (VR-MR) techniques for various safety-related applications such as training, hazard monitoring, and preconstruction planning. This paper reviews the recent trends in virtual-and mixed-reality applications in construction safety, explicitly focusing on virtual-reality and mixed-reality techniques as the two major types of computer-generated simulated experiences. Following a systematic literature assessment methodology, this study summarizes the results of articles that have been published over the last decade and illustrates the research trends of virtual-and mixed-reality applications in construction safety while focusing on the technological components of individual studies.Safety 2019, 5, 51 2 of 16 high refresh rates, accurate point-of-view tracking; these benefits are possible at lower costs than in the past, mainly because VR-MR systems are gaining traction in the mainstream gaming community [9]. Investment in VR-MR technology is increasing, and the VR-MR market is projected to increase from $2.67 billion in 2015 to $66.68 billion by 2022 [10].This study analyses the current trends in virtual-and mixed-reality applications in construction safety, particularly focusing on virtual-reality and mixed-reality platforms as the two major types of computer-generated simulated experiences. This study also focuses on the technological components of those VR-MR studies and discusses individual examples of research projects that implemented such technologies for construction safety application. A few scholars have published review articles of digital visualization techniques for safety applications. Zhou et al. [11] conducted a review of advanced technology for safety. Bhoir and Esmaeili [12] explored VR environments for safety; Guo et al. [13] looked at visualization technologies for safety. Li et al. [14] reviewed virtual and augmented reality systems for safety. Unlike other reviews, this study asks specific research questions through a systematic review technique and individually discusses the papers within the context of different safety applications, as well as their technological components. Moreover, by intentionally limiting the scope of the review to VR and MR, this study can highlight interactive safety interventions with detailed summaries of application areas, while separating VR and MR from the larger, general field of BIM (Building Information Modeling), 4D CAD (Computer-Aided Design), and other visualization technologies. The significance of this research lies in that it presents the application status of VR and MR in enhancing safety in the construction domain and brings more attention to these promising technologies and ultimately improves safety in the construction domain. As a pillar industry of the Chinese national economy, the construction sector needs to improve its level of management to embrace sustainable development. Sustainable construction project management (SCPM) performance evaluation can help to raise the level of management. However, the existing evaluation system that takes into account both the sustainable development and the dimension of traditional project management is meager. In order to address this problem, this study sets out an integrated sustainable performance evaluation method for SCPM, along with a comprehensive analysis of both traditional and future management directions. Through literature review and enterprise data analysis of the relevant factors of finance, schedule, quality, and safety, etc., indicators are filtered and classified. In order to determine the strength of each indicator, a questionnaire is administered to construction professionals within a large construction enterprise (group). From the result of the weight with an improved Group-G1 (iG1) method (finance 0.206, schedule 0.206, quality 0.185, safety 0.134, informatization 0.134, and greenization 0.134), it indicates that finance, schedule and quality management are still top three important dimensions in SCPM. However, amazingly, the greenization and informatization management is as significant as safety management. Finally, based on set pair analysis, the Guangzhou Metro Line 7 project is used as a verifying case, affirming the validity of the sustainable performance evaluation model. The above SCPM evaluation model can not only provide a guideline for construction companies' sustainable management in China, but also serve as reference cases for other countries/regions to carry out relevant research work.Sustainability 2019, 11, 5731 2 of 17 low profit, large resource consumption, serious environmental pollution, and poor ability to utilize information technology within the construction industry have raised concerns [4]. Moreover, traditional management fails to adequately address problems that often exist in areas of quality, scheduling, and safety, etc. [5]. China's state-owned construction companies generate a profit margin of 3.5%, compared with 10% for foreign companies [2]. According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the construction industry accounts for about 40% of total national energy consumption, and produces between 45% and 65% of the disposed waste in landfills [6]. At the same time, the informatization level of the construction industry is only higher than that of agriculture, ranking the second to last among all industries [7]. Abstract. The unsafe behavior of workers is the main object of construction safety management, in which violations require increased attention due to their pernicious consequences. However, existing studies have merely discussed violations separately from unsafe behaviors. To respond quickly to workers' violations on site, this study proposes a real-time control approach based on intelligent video surveillance. First, scenes reflecting unsafe behaviors are automatically acquired through camera-based behavior analysis technology. Meanwhile, the time corresponding to the construction phase is recorded. Second, the temporal association rule model of worker's unsafe behavior is constructed, and the rule "construction phase→unsafe behavior" is determined by the Apriori algorithm to identify target behaviors necessary for critical control in different construction phases. Finally, statistical process control is used to find the trends of violations with frequency and mass characteristics through the dynamic monitoring of target behavior. In addition, real-time alerts of these unsafe acts are produced simultaneously. A pilot study is conducted on the cross-river tunnel project in Wuhan city, Hubei, China, and the violations related to construction machineries is proven to be controllable. Thus, the proposed approach promotes behavioral safety management on construction since it effectively controls workers' violations by real-time monitoring and analysis.
