Pro- and Synbiotics to Prevent Sepsis in Major Surgery and Severe Emergencies

Abstract: Septic morbidity associated with advanced surgical and medical treatments is unacceptably high, and so is the incidence of complications occurring in connection with acute emergencies such as severe trauma and severe acute pancreatitis. Only considering the US, it will annually affect approximately (app) 300 million (mill) of a population of almost one million inhabitants and cause the death of more than 200,000 patients, making sepsis the tenth most common cause of death in the US. Two major factors affect th… Show more

“…Sepsis is a life-threatening complication of infection and characterized by physiologic, pathologic, and biochemical abnormalities [1, 2]. It is the tenth-most-common cause of death globally [3] and the most common cause of death in patients with infections, especially when sepsis is not identified and treated promptly. Early treatment of sepsis improves patients’ mortality and outcome [1].…”

“…Using a synbiotic helps the growth of host microorganisms in the gut with probiotic properties (Furrie et al, 2005;Picaud et al, 2010;Roberfroid, 1998). The synbiotic concept combines efficacious probiotic strains with specific prebiotic compounds in a single product (Zhang et al, 2010;Fotiadis et al, 2008;Bengmark, 2012;Martin et al, 2012;Ghosh, 2012).
