Private speech: evidence for second language learning strategies during the ‘silent’ period

Abstract: This study focuses on children who go through a ‘silent’ period early in the course of second language development, during which they largely cease verbal communication with speakers of the second language (English). Video recordings with radio microphones under natural conditions revealed that most of these children engaged in extensive private speech, which they were found to use for a variety of intrapersonal learning strategies, including (1) repetition of others' utterances, (2) recall and practice, (3) c… Show more

“…PS was also examined in its internalizing role, that is, as an overt or subvocal mechanism aiding in the internalization of the L2. Early evidence of this type of PS was provided by Saville-Troike (1988) in a study of the L2 language learning strategies of small school children. PS with an internalizing function was also explored in studies with older children in L2 classroom contexts (Broner & Tarone 2001;de Courcy 2003) and adult L2 learners (Ohta 2001;Centeno-Cortés 2003;Lantolf & Yáñez 2003).…”

“…In phonological development, second language learners may use nonarticulatory inner speech (Murphy, 1989), subvocalization or silent practice (Catford & Pisoni, 1970), and private speech (Saville-Troike, 1988). SavilleTroike (1988) noted that learners practice when they expect to produce language in the future.…”

“…Como a literatura atualizada sobre o uso da fala privada por adultos é escassa tanto no exterior como no Brasil (ver Smith, 2007;Ferreira, 2000), sendo que a maioria dos estudos se dá em SL e com crianças (ver Vygotsky, 1987; Diaz e Berk, 1992;Azmitia, 1992;Saville-Troike, 1988;Winsler et al, 2000), percebe-se, como apontam Lantolf e Thorne (2006) e Lantolf (2000, a necessidade de estudos que foquem o uso da fala privada em ABSTRACT -Second language/foreign language acquisition research based on the principles of sociocultural theory reveals the need for studies that investigate the use of private speech by adult learners engaged in collaborative tasks. This article aims to discuss the role of private speech in English as a foreign language learning, based on the analysis of its use by adult learners engaged in a collaborative task in Brazil.…”
