Private Hospital Energy Performance Benchmarking Using Energy Audit Data: An Italian Case Study

Abstract: The increased focus on energy efficiency, both at the national and international levels, has fostered the diffusion and development of specific energy consumption benchmarks for most relevant economic sectors. In this context, energy-intensive facilities, such as hospitals and health structures, represent a unique case. Indeed, despite the high energy consumption of these structures, scientific literature lacks the presence of adequate energy performance benchmarks, especially in regard to the European context… Show more

“…Building and healthcare facility energy consumption rules are becoming more important in this setting. About 40% of the total energy used in the G7 nations is used to power buildings (Dadi et al 2022). As a result, it presents a significant chance to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions by decreasing the amount of energy needed to power buildings (Chang and Hu 2019).…”

“…The increased attention on energy efficiency, both at the national and international levels, has fostered the diffusion and development of specific energy consumption benchmarks for most relevant economic sectors. In this Special Issue, several articles examine energy consumption and the energy efficiency potential at sectoral level [1][2][3][4]. Energy audits (EAs) provide comprehensive information about the energy usage in a specific facility, identifying and quantifying cost-effective energy performance improvement actions (EPIAs).…”

“…As far as studies at sectoral level are concerned, four single sectors are examined, one in the tertiary sector and three in the industrial sector [1,[3][4][5]. In the second group, the refining sector is analysed; it is peculiar due to its key role in energy production [5].…”

“…For instance, Li et al (2021), employed three benchmarking modelling methods to analyse information on energy consumption and building features for a number of public hospitals in Shanghai; an approach suggested in cases of scarce data [16]. Studies where data was readily available also have dealt with benchmarking following different methodologies; for instance, an Italian case study used energy audit information and national standards to define indicators applicable to the private healthcare sector of Italy [17].…”
