Private forest reserves can aid in preserving the community of medium and large-sized vertebrates in the Amazon arc of deforestation

Abstract: Due to the advancing agricultural frontier in the Brazilian Amazon, the present rate of deforestation engenders a pessimistic scenario for vertebrate diversity in the area. Protected areas are an essential conservation tool to limit biodiversity loss, but their efficiency have yet to be proven. Here, we used camera-trap data on the presence of medium and large-size vertebrates in a protected area (Cantão State Park) and a neighbouring private forest reserve (Santa Fé Ranch) to evaluate their effectiveness in p… Show more

“…The relative abundance of these species in this region is considerable, especially due to the existence of residents. The activity patterns of the species follow the description by Negrões (2011), and observerd by Botelho (2013) in RESEX Alto Tarauacá, Acre, Brazil. The high number of diurnal records of red deer, for example, is important.…”

“…For instance, its relative abundance in PA Maracá is ~70% of the overall abundance of the area, and is almost the total relative abundance of the second most abundant area, PA Uatumã. As expected, the latter does not have such a high Tayassu pecari abundance as most areas of the Guyana shield (Munari et al 2011, Negrões et al 2011, Botelho et al 2012, Santos and Oliveira 2012.…”

“…The creation of private reserves has been an important strategy for biodiversity conservation in Brazil (e.g. Schiavetti et al 2010, Negrõ es et al 2011. At REGUA, as in other private reserves, the surveillance is done generally by locals, mostly former hunters, who know the region well and are able to keep gatherers and hunters away.…”
