Privacy and proportionality

Abstract: We argue that an analytic proportionality assessment balancing usefulness and burden on individual or group privacy must be conducted throughout the design process to create acceptable ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) applications and services. We introduce the principle of proportionality, which originates within the legal and data protection communities. Inspired by this principle, we develop a design method for ubicomp applications, based on our own experience, and aimed at HCI practitioners and designers. We… Show more

“…These investigations have often uncovered generalized concerns about the tracking and recording that is inherent in Ubicomp systems (e.g., [2], [11], [25]). At the same time, however, other investigations have indicated that people are not concerned with many new Ubicomp technologies (e.g., [5], [20]).…”

“…Iachello [11] identified existing privacy frameworks and methods in the field of HCI, grouped as guidelines [8,9,17], process frameworks [7,12,31] and model frameworks [13,18,30]. STRAP [12] and PriFs [31] focus specifically in requirements elicitation combined with goal oriented analysis methods [5,16].…”

“…Our market model does not have a level of privacy protection that arms individuals against intentional, targeted attacks by organizations or criminals. We adopt the principle of proportionality that aims to balance economic utility with privacy (Iachello and Abowd, 2005). For instance, we embrace the fact that with access to voluminous data sets, anonymous data can theoretically be re-identified.…”

“…Rather, trade-offs between functionality, usability, and processed PI have to be made on a case-bycase basis to ensure good-enough-privacy. The principle of proportionality has been applied successfully to make decisions of this kind (Iachello and Abowd, 2005).…”
