Prioritization of Strategies for Tourism Development by Applying a Swot-Swara Analysis: The Case of Sokobanja Spa

Abstract: This manuscript proposes the utilization of the SWOT-SWARA analysis for the prioritization of tourism development strategies. The applicability and simplicity of the proposed analysis is demonstrated by the example of the tourism destination of Sokobanja Spa in the Republic of Serbia. By using the SWOT analysis, three decision-makers defined the key sub-factors and development strategies, after which they performed the prioritization of the SWOT factors, sub-factors and strategies by applying the SWARA method.… Show more

“…The proposed model has certain benefits relative to the SWARA method, which is also used in combination with SWOT analysis (Popović, Milovanović and Stanujkić 2018). Although the SWARA method, which represents the core of extended PIPRECIA, has a computational procedure that is much easier, it is not suitable for a group decision environment.…”

“…This model is often applied in strategic planning in tourism (Kajanus, Kangas and Kurttila 2004;Mimović, Kocić and Milanović 2012;Akbulak and Cengiz 2014;Nikolić et al 2015;Demir, Esbah and Akgün 2016). In addition to the A'WOT model, other combinations of the MCDM methods and SWOT analysis have also been proposed as a decision-making aid in tourism (Arsić, Nikolić and Živković 2017;Ajmera 2017;Abadi et al 2018;Khan 2018;Popović, Milovanović and Stanujkić 2018;Jiskani et al 2020).…”

“…Namely, the procedure of the given method complicates the obtaining of the final results when there are more decision-makers involved in the decision-making process. For example, Popović et al (2018) applied the SWARA method for prioritization of the factors regarding the tourism development of the Sokobanja Spa in the group decision environment. Besides its simply numerical procedure, the pre-sorting of the considered factors complicated obtaining the overall results from all involved decision-makers.…”

“…The MCDM represents a helpful approach to undertaking the decision process that leads to finding appropriate choices. Until now, the MCDM methods have been used for resolving many different problems that belong to various business fields (e. g. Sokolović et al, 2021;Štirbanović et al, 2021;Randjelović et al, 2020;Popović et al, 2018).…”
