Principles of Product Flexibility

Abstract: Contemporary products need to evolve to accommodate competitive market pressures, rapid technological change and transient and multi-dimensional customer requirements. Product flexibility is defined as the adaptability of a system in response to these factors. Currently, flexible products are realized with ad hoc methods that rely on the experience and intuition of the designer. In this work, a set of formal principles is presented for guiding the design of flexible products. These principles are derived from … Show more

“…Besides [11] further authors ( [12], [13], [14] and [15]) address research about the flexibility of engineering products. All these researchers agree on the fact that the flexibility of a product acts as a suitable enabler for product architecture modifications.…”

“…Qureshi et al (2006) propose 17 different strategies to achieve flexibility in a product, grouped into four types: a modular approach, a special approach, an interface decoupling approach and an adjustability approach based on the principle of TRIZ (e.g. Altshuller, 1998), Martin & Ishii (2002)).…”

“…The 17 th of Qureshi et al's strategic principles, referred to enabling "the device to respond to minor changes, by controlling the tuning of design parameters". Both Qureshi et al (2006) andMuir Wood et al (2010) advocate assessing the flexibility of a product by systematically anticipating and rating the potential changes to 'future proof' the design. Ross and Hastings (2005) advocate assessing the changeability of a system by mapping out the tradespace, i.e.…”

“…A few approaches have been proposed in that direction. Qureshi et al (2006) defined "product flexibility" as the adaptability of a system in response to changing factors. Since flexible products were realized with ad hoc methods that rely on the experience and intuition of the designer, they presented a set of formal principles for guiding the design of flexible products.…”
