Queerbaiting: The ‘playful’ possibilities of homoeroticism

This article explores the concept of ‘queerbaiting’, a term employed by media fans to criticise homoerotic suggestiveness in contemporary television when this suggestiveness is not actualised in the program narrative. I confront the negative connotations of the term and point to the agency of audiences, using the practices of ‘slash fans’ within the Merlin fandom as my case study. I trace definitions of queerbaiting in recent scholarly work and suggest comparison with another term, ‘hoyay’, which has more positive connotations. My central argument is that as this concept begins its inevitable permeation into academic work, worth considering are the queer readings that ‘queerbaiting’ in fact make possible, even plausible, which is an understanding of the term that is in line with the ‘poaching’ and ‘playful’ spirit of media fandom.

À l'inverse, images ou vidéos sont traitées comme des productions ancillaires ou comme des ornements hasardeux, non comme des créations intentionnelles et assumées. Pourtant, les fanfictions audiovisuelles existent bien et elles sont même des manifestations d'une littératie multimodale. Cet article analyse donc les réticences qui expliquent ce décalage théorique, à travers un examen historique puis épistémologique. Il montre ensuite quels effets de légitimation ont pu encore biaiser la conception des fanfictions. À travers un corpus de fanvidéos, il fait la preuve que les fanfictions sont pleinement des moyens d'expression de soi au sein d'un fandom et montre à quel point la narration audiovisuelle peut s'avérer un précieux outil de production et d'interprétation. AbstractAccording to recent research, fanfictions are inextricably linked to linguistic texts and writings. Conversely, pictures or movies are regarded as accessories or ancillary productions rather than as intentional creative works. However, audiovisual fanfictions do exist and are the manifestation of multimodal literacy. First, this article put foward an historical and epistomological analysis which might explain why this discrepancy still persist. Second, the article argues that some legitimization effects could have distort the concept of fanfictions. Through a corpus of fanvids, it demonstrates that fanfictions are literally ways of self-expression among the fandom and shows how much audiovisual narrative might be a valuable production and interpretation tool.Mots-clés : fanfiction, fanvidéo, littératie audiovisuelle, sujet multimodal, écriture.
