Primary retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma: An exceptional disease in adulthood

Abstract: Primary retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma is an extremely rare disease in clinical practice. It is classified as a vascular tumor. Only three cases have been reported in the literature. The diagnosis is uncommon due to the lack of specific radiological features. It becomes symptomatic as a consequence of its enormous size or complications like rupture or compression. We herein report a unique case of primary retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma treated with conventional surgery in a 35‐year‐old male patient… Show more

“…4,10,11 They are typically attached or adjacent to surrounding organs or major vessels. 5,6,[8][9][10][12][13][14][15] In contrast, in the present case, the lesion formed a capsule that was separated from other organs and major vessels, similar to a neoplasm. Surgical resection is possible for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, although intervention for vascular malformations is indicated only for large lesions with a threat of incidental rupture and/ or bleeding.…”

“…On imaging studies, cavernous hemangiomas are often characterized by a lobulated septate mass without a clear capsule (cotton wool appearance) 4,10,11 . They are typically attached or adjacent to surrounding organs or major vessels 5,6,8–10,12–15 . In contrast, in the present case, the lesion formed a capsule that was separated from other organs and major vessels, similar to a neoplasm.…”

“…The pathology description strongly indicates a venous malformation. Venous malformations are benign congenital vascular anomalies that can arise in various organs such as the liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands and even intramuscularly 7. According to the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies classification, they are one of two vascular anomalies, with the other being vascular tumours like infantile haemangiomas 8.…”
