Primary pure squamous cell carcinoma of the breast diagnosed by fine‐needle aspiration cytology: A case study using liquid‐based cytology

Abstract: Pure primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an extremely rare type of breast tumor. We report one of such cases in a 32-year-old woman, diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Aspiration smears were characterized by squamous cells, both isolated and in aggregates, at various stages of maturation. The tumor was excised, and the histologic sections confirmed the cytologic diagnosis. Pure primary SCC of the breast has a distinctive cytomorphologic appearance, and diagnosis of this tumor by FNAC is … Show more

“…However, CT imaging in our case did not identify multiple lesions or lymphadenopathy of the axilla. Fine-needle aspiration cytology has been reported to successfully identify both primary and metastatic malignancies of the breast [10,14]. Excisional or core biopsy is usually needed for final pathological confirmation, as in our case.…”

“…The neoplastic cells infiltrate the adjacent stroma and an increase in size occurs on follow-up. Among the reported cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the breast, the diagnosis using FNAS was different: benignity or malignancy [11,12]. This difference was caused by the difficultly in the evaluation of the atypia of squamous epithelium, and so if RCBM is used for such tumors, it provides a precise evaluation of the atypical status of squamous epithelium and relationship between the atypical epithelium and stroma, leading to a precise diagnosis.…”

“…Squamous cells are normally not found inside the breast, so a PSCCB is an exceptional phenomenon. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Until 2010, only 100 cases of PSCCB have been reported. [9] The World Health Organization categorized these tumor as a metaplasia carcinoma.…”

“…metastasis of a squamous cell carcinoma somewhere else in the body and squamous metaplasia in ductal carcinoma of breast are the key for specifi c diagnosis and management. [1,4,[6][7][8]10,11] The management and prognosis of PSCCB is still controversial. [2,4,5,7] We report a case of PSCCB in a 52-year-old woman, with discussion of cytology, and histology fi ndings.…”
