“…Patients with primary peritoneal carcinoma tend to be older, 32,33 and when suboptimally debulked may have better survival rates than ovarian serous carcinoma patients. 3,34,35 The prognosis of primary peritoneal carcinoma compared to ovarian serous carcinoma of the same stage is controversial with some studies reporting worse, same or better survival. 32,36,37 A more recent matched case-comparison study demonstrated platinum resistance and impaired survival in patients with advanced primary peritoneal carcinomas.…”

“…It is generally suggested that PPC should be managed following the treatment regimens established for EOC (Piver et al, 1997;Eltabbakh et al, 1998a). However, controversy exits concerning Journal of Zhejiang University SCIENCE B ISSN 1673-1581 (Print); ISSN 1862-1783 (Online) www.zju.edu.cn/jzus; www.springerlink.com E-mail: jzus@zju.edu.cn the ability to perform optimal surgical debulking and its clinical significance in PPC (Fromm et al, 1990;Ben-Baruch et al, 1996;Eltabbakh et al, 1998a). So far only a few studies have examined the molecular changes associated with PPC and do not find a definite prognostic factor.…”

“…In PSPC, the prognosis of the patients treated with chemotherapy alone, especially in those intensive intravenous chemotherapy cannot be done, is generally poor (10,24). In contrast, mean survival periods of those treated with both cytoreductive surgery and intensive platinum-based chemotherapy have been reported to be 17-24 months (25)(26)(27). Here, one patient (case 3) lived for 58 months without recurrence of the tumor by optimal cytoreductive surgery together with intensive intravenous and intraperitoneal chemotherapy, and another (case 4) is still living for 20 months with intensive intravenous and intrathoracic chemotherapy.…”
